Home > Blog > You've been in an auto accident. Now what do you do?
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2019

You've been in an auto accident. Now what do you do?

First, take a deep breath!

We are here to help you through the situation! Whether it’s a minor fender-bender, or a more serious incident, here are some things to do immediately after an accident happens.

We suggest printing & storing this page in your glove compartment, just in case you need it. You’ll have helpful tips and contact information all in one convenient location.

  • Stop your vehicle and turn on your hazard lights. Stopping your vehicle is required by law in all states.
  • Call for medical assistance if any parties require attention.
  • Call the police. They will advise you if their response is necessary or not.
  • Do not admit fault to anyone. Do give factual details of the accident to the police to the best of your recollection
  • Exchange information with the other parties involved in the accident, including names, addresses, phone numbers, type and ownership of vehicles, insurance information and damage description.
  • Try to identify any witnesses. Obtain their names, addresses and telephone numbers.
  • If possible, take photos of the accident scene prior to the involved vehicles being moved.
  • Do not sign anything, unless it’s for the police or your insurance agent.
  • As soon as possible, contact your insurance agent to report the accident.

And, as long as we’re talking car & auto safety, do you have an emergency kit in your vehicle? It should include:

  • Flares
  • Jumper Cables
  • Blanket
  • Water
  • Pen & Paper
  • Non-perishable Food
  • Ice Scraper
  • Flashlight
  • Tire Inflator

No one wants an accident to happen, but if it does, we want you to be prepared. Please contact us if we can answer any questions.

Raving Fans

Thank you so much for all the time and careful explanation you shared this morning --- You are SO knowledgeable and well spoken!

I have alerted State Farm that I have found a superior company/policy. So, let's proceed with our plan to begin coverage on Monday, July 22!

Many, many thanks again, Julie!
